I am an addict - or - why I returned.

I am an addict and I have returned to sate my habit. I tried to ignore my habit by not playing for 5.5 months. As if that denial was a reality: not playing but regularly (b)logging my decline in the game (see archives from Sep 2006 to mid Feb this year). That's hardly what a "professional" might call denial. More like actively maintaining one's habit without having a whack - or a drop, vote or raid, as the case may be (sort of like NA, innit?).

A few weeks back, whilst blogging my decline from 6th in the game to 61st (and even as low as 62nd), Dave left a comment

Rantz. Come back to us! We miss you, bro!

That got my interest going and tipped me back across that line of don't! to uh-oh...I've got that itch. Sortly thereafter, I visited the composites page to see if I had moved down again. Noted that it was Nexy's birthday and had to log into #blogshares to say g'day and Happy Birthday - couldn't possibly miss that opportunity. I'm rather confident that was when the uh-oh...I've got that itch turned into early March, I'll start early March - six months after leaving, once my holidays are over and I've had time to settle back int work. As such, I had Mr Pilot reset my account emails, which I had "anonymised" when I left (or thought I had - did so with forums account but not game).

Except it didn't work that way: I was on the penultimate day of my holidays, in suburban Melbourne and it was a stinker of day, close to 40 degrees C and dry, dry, dry. Too hot too play with my diabolos or pois: the only realistic activity had to be inside in front of a fan on full-bore. Wonder what that activity would have to be? You guessed it: a computer connected to the internet and BlogShares. Reset game and forum passwords, logged in to both as well #blogshares and had an absolutley marvellous day. w00t!

Before this day, my composite ranking was (and this is from one week before, so I'm not sure of the exacty day) "#61 Rantz Oct 26 2004 0 0 0 19 99 78 196". After this day? #58 Rantz Oct 26 2004 0 0 0 21 99 78 198 w00t!

So I'm back - addiction at the fore. and it has been a rather incredble 9 days. Incredible for a number of a reasons:

1. The community
2. The community
3. The community

I could be absolutely ridiculous and repeat that 23 times, but I won't. At least not in this post. What I do have to say in this post is something to convince you, as readers of this blog, to join BlogShares. Just do it, okay? And, if you do so as a result of reading this post, send me a message via the game and I'll gladly purchase a one month premium membership to get you going in the game. After that, if you decide that it's the place for you, you'll be able to make chips and give me 15,000 of them and I'll purchase a one year premium membership on your behalf. Whether you like computer games or not (and I'm in the not category), I reckon you'll enjoy this game as there is so much to do. Really.

In the nine days I've now been back in the game, I've made signifcant advance in my composite ranking, going from 61st and 58th noted above to currently sit on #31 Rantz Oct 26 2004 6 36 23 55 99 76 295 when I blogged it this morning. Easy:

• social capital - ie gifts and loans from friends I've made in the game since I joined in late 2004 such that I moved into top 100 in wealth;
• economic capital - ie purchased 50,000 chips from the Chips for Sale corporation such that I moved into top 100 in chips;
• political capital - ie joined Aliens Corporation and invested my B$ in same;
• experience capital - ie reindexed for ideas and artes that I didn't have to move into top 100 in ideas (already being in same for artes, karma and sigma);
• knowledge capital - ie voted and moderated blogs into industries to increase karma, sigma and chips; and
  
• luck capital - snagged an arte (or was it 2?) via chances.php.

Having noted the good stuff above, I think it only just that I document a few stuff-ups as well:

1. I've voted a few blogs into incorrect industries and, realising so at the time, reported same to get them removed before they would be rejected by a moderator;
   
2. I incorrectly rejected votes during a moderation as I could not get the blog to load, thus costing Amadeus karma and chips;
3. Voted a blog into Blog Demographics sub-industries, noted that they were rejected and that blog had been delisted and so reported it in the "Report Incorrectly Delisted/Reported Blogs Here" thread - to then realise that of course the votes were rejected - the blog was well and truly dead.
   

Hint to new users: the important thing to take on from the above mistakes is that you need to report your mistakes when you note them - BSEC cases could result, otherwise. Make sure that you learn something if you do get taken before the BSEC - moderation is not a guessing game.

Hint to new users: keep track of your votes - not so you can retaliate should mistakes be made against your votes but so that you can learn from your mistakes - and you will make them. We all do.

Where to from here? Easy - I've three aims:

1. move up to 23rd in Composites;
2. reclaim 1st in Karma; and
3. maintain both the above in perpetuity.

1, above will be easy. 2, above, will be difficult - RUS is a regular and consistent voter - but I'm on the way... 3, above, of course will have to wait until 2 - challenges...

...they do await.
