A FORMER Victorian drug squad officer accused of playing a role in Australia's biggest drugs theft staged his own kidnapping and robbery, a court heard today.": Wasn't me, Officer.
Russell Geoffrey Bassett, 44, appeared in the Victorian County Court facing charges of theft, drug trafficking and inciting a person to kidnap.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Seven drums - about 175kg - of pseudoephedrine, which can be used to make amphetamines, were stolen during a delivery to a pharmaceutical processor in the Melbourne suburb of Croydon in August 2001.
Prosecutor Peter McDermott told the court the former officer was working as a chemical courier at the time of the incident.
